4th International Singing Competition
for Baroque Opera Pietro Antonio Cesti
11–16 August 2013

The International Singing Competition for Baroque Opera Pietro Antonio Cesti will take place in Innsbruck for the fourth time. Named after the Italian composer Pietro Antonio Cesti, who turned Innsbruck into a centre for the Italian opera north of the Alps in the mid-17th century, young singers from all over the world with a special talent and training will compete in the varied field that is the baroque opera for participation in the final concert on 16 August. Special prizes will be awarded with view to the BAROQUE OPERA:YOUNG production by the Innsbruck Festival to take place the following year, with the special prize winners performing.

100 young singers from 33 countries will attend the 3rd International Singing Competition for Baroque Opera Pietro Antonio Cesti 2012!

The 3nd International Singing Competition for Baroque Opera Pietro Antonio Cesti 2012, held by the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music, has drawn a strong response from young singers worldwide. Out of 130 applications, 100 young singers from 33 countries and six continents were chosen to participate in the 1st round. From 18 to 23 August, female singers (born 1981 and later) and male singers (born 1979 and later), who come from “A” as in Australia to “V” as in Venezuela, will face the jury in this Academy Project.

International experience
Once again, some of the singers will be highly experienced, having worked with leading musical personalities such as Valery Gergiev, William Christie, Thomas Hengelbrock, John Eliot Gardiner, Alessandro De Marchi, Lars Ulrich Mortensen, Andrea Marcon, Paul Goodwin, Richard Egarr, Christophe Rousset, Laurence Cummings, Christopher Hogwood, Vincent Dumestre, Andrew Lawrence-King, Gabriel Garrido, Diego Fasolis, Michael Chance, Sigiswald Kujiken, Harry Christophers and Ruben Dubrovsky, as well as with famous ensembles such as Les Arts Florissants, Kammerorchersterbasel,  Venice Baroque Orchestra, La Cetra Barockorchester Basel, Wiener Akademie, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Academy of Ancient Music, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Accademia Bizantina und King’s Consort. The singers gave concerts as soloists in venues such as the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Musikverein in Vienn, Berlin Konzerthaus, the Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Barbican Center, the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris, in Aix-en-Provence, the Boston Early Music Festival, the Göttingen International Handel Festival, the Bachfest Leipzig, the Glyndebourne Festival and Musikfestspiele Potsdam. They had engagements as opera singers in the Opera House in Cologne, the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz, the Copenhagen Opera House, the Kings Place in London, Norwegian National Opera in Oslo, the Marinski Theatre in St. Petersburg, Bulgarian National Opera, the Opera House in Leipzig and the Teatro Real in Madrid.

Final concert
The final concert is open to the public and will take place on 23 August (7 p.m., Tiroler Landeskonservatorium). The winner of a special prize will be voted directly by the audience. The 100 singers will be competing for three main prizes (4,000 euros, 3,000 euros and 2,000 euros), the Atle Vestersjø Young Artists Award (1,500 euros), the audience prize (1,000 euros) as well as special prizes from the Vienna Resonanzen Festival, the Musikfestspiele Potsdam-Sanssouci, the Theater an der Wien and the BAROQUE OPERA:YOUNG of the 2013 Innsbruck Festival of Early Music. These prizes are connected to follow-up engagements at the mentioned festivals and venues.

The repertoire
The repertoire in the competition comprises arias and scenes from baroque operas by George Frideric Handel, Claudio Monteverdi, Henry Purcell, Francesco Cavalli, Pietro Antonio Cesti and Antonio Vivaldi. The focus lies on Purcell‘s „Dido and Aeneas“, which will be performed in 2013 together with John Blow’s opera “Venus and Adonis” as a part of BAROQUE OPERA:YOUNG, a project of the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music. The first two rounds will be taking place from 19 to 21 August. On 22 August, there is a preparation round for the finals and on 23 August, the final round will take place, with ten finalists competing against each other.

The jury
The high-class jury is composed of renowned representatives of the baroque opera scene: Alessandro De Marchi, conductor, artistic director of the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music, Anne Gjevang, John Mark Ainsley, opera singer, Hein Mulders, (designated director from 2013 of the Aalto Theatre and the and the Philharmonie Essen), Eitan Sorek, Artist Manager Sorek Artists Management, Alberto Triola, artistic director of the Festival della Valle d'Itria, Martina Franca, Joshua Winograde, director of artistic administration and casting at the Los Angeles Opera, and the chairman of the jury Sebastian F. Schwarz, director of artistic administration and casting at the Theater an der Wien.

Hungarian Winner at the 2nd International Singing Competition for Baroque Opera Pietro Antonio Cesti

The winner of the 2nd International Singing Competition for Baroque Opera Pietro Antonio Cesti, held by the 2011 Innsbruck Festival of Early Music comes from Hungary: At the final concert, 25-year-old soprano Emöke Baráth impressed the jury as well as the audience with her outstanding performance. She received the 1st prize, which includes prize money of 4,000 euros, as well as the special prize directly voted by the audience, worth 1,000 euros.
The only singing competition for baroque opera worldwide was again dominated by female artists. The 2nd prize (3,000 euros) was awarded to the 29-year-old Israeli soprano Tehila Nini Goldstein. The 3rd prize (2,000 euros) went to the 29-year-old Italian mezzo-soprano Romina Tomasoni. The Atle Vestersjø Young Artists Award, also awarded by the jury, went to the 22-year-old Italian Anna Maria Sarra. The special prize from the Wiener Konzerthaus for an appearance in a concert during the 2012 Vienna Resonanzen Festival was awarded to the 24-year-old countertenor from Great Britain, Rupert Enticknap.

All in all, 71 singers from 27 countries came to Innsbruck to be judged by the high-class jury, consisting of Alessandro De Marchi, conductor, artistic director of the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music, Sophie de Lint, designated opera director from 2012/13 of the Zurich Opera House, Claude Cortese, artistic director of the Angers Nantes Opera, Alan Curtis, conductor, Paolo Monacchi, artist manager, Paris, Joshua Winograde, director of artistic administration and casting at the Los Angeles Opera, and the chairman of the jury Sebastian F. Schwarz, director of artistic administration and casting at the Theater an der Wien.

The ten finalists were not only judged by the jury
More than 120 competitors from 34 countries sought to make it into the finals. Only ten of them succeeded in this task and were judged not only by the jury but also by the audience in the concert hall, as well as by enthusiastic baroque opera fans at their computer screens at home. Thanks to the cooperation with the Innsbruck Media College, tirol.orf.at and the online-streaming provider INNCAST, the competition was broadcast directly on the website of the Innsbruck Festival. All those who missed this evening have the possibility to watch the stream of the entire final concert during the next few days on altemusik.at. The video is played in a loop.

Emőke Baráth was born in 1985 in Hungary. She started her musical studies when seh was 6,playing the piano and cello and harp and singing in choirs. In 2003 she received Special Award, and in 2005 and 2006 First Prizes at National Singing Competitions.After  entrance examinations she gained admission to the class of Júlia Pászthy at Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest in 2007. In 2009 she has been awarded  3rd prize at the 44th Antonín Dvorak International Singing Competition. She sang  the role of Dorinda (G.F.Handel: Orlando)in 2009 and Apamia (Vivaldi:Tigrane),First Witch and Second Woman(H.Purcell: Dido and Aeneas) in 2010.She participated at several  masterclasses in Hungary and abroad( Austria, Boston,USA,Switzerland )by Barbara Bonney, Kiri Te Kanawa,  Deborah York,Nancy Argenta, Eva Marton,László Polgár,Antoine Palloc,Nicholas Clapton,Ludy Vrijdag,Ricard Bordas . Recently she has been invited to concert halls and festivals ( Palace of Arts-Budapest,Sopron Early Music days,Miskolc Opera Festival,Tschaikovsky Concert Hall, Pushkin Museum- Moscow,Verbier Festival- Switzerland) as soloist.

Tehila Nini Goldstein (Soprano, Israel/USA, 29)

2nd Prize

Tehila Nini Goldstein (USA/Israel), Began singing at the age of 20 after her military service. In recent years Tehila collaborated with William Christie at “Les Jardin des Voix”, in the 30th anniversary of “Les Arts Florissants” at the Opera Comique, at Theater an der Wien as the cover for the legendary Cecilia Bartoli in “Semele”, and in 2011-12 in “La Didone” by Cavalli. Recent and future projects include covering the title role of “Antigone” at the Berlin Staatsoper with Renee Jacobs, concerts at the Georgian festival “From Easter to Ascension” in Tbilisi, Participation in the Aix en Provence “Mozart Academie”, concerts of the “Johannes Passion” (soloist version) with Sigiswald Kuijken and the Israeli Bach Soloists, a recent CD recording of works by Jackob Schönberg with Jascha Nemtzov and members of the Vogler Quartet, concerts of Mahler’s 4th Symphony (chamber version) with the “Meitar Ensemble”, performance at Carnegie Hall of “Here comes Messiah!” by Matti Kovler written for Ms. Nini, and participation in the Opera “l’Absence” by Sarah Nemtzov at the 2012 Munich Biennale. Tehila has sung the roles of Zerlina, Serpina and Pamina amongst others. She currently resides in Berlin.

Atle Vestersjø Young Talent Award

Anna Maria Sarra was born in December 27, 1988 in Bari/Italy. Graduated in singing when she was 18 years-old, Conservatory of Music “E.R. Duni" in Matera. She has participated the opera studio of Academy of Santa Cecilia, given by Renata Scotto, Anna Vandi and Cesare Scarton. She participated the courses of Accademia Rossiniana held by Alberto Zedda. Masterclasses with Claudio Desderi , Alfonso Antoniozzi, Luciana Serra, Raul Gimenez, Bruno Bartoletti, Francisco Araiza, Sonia Prina. She won awards in the competitions such as Franco Alfano, Fedora Barbieri and Maria Caniglia, As.Li.Co. Higlights from her performed repertoire are Anaide in Il Cappello di paglia di Firenze by Nino Rota at Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Soprano in Cantata BWV 207 in Johann Sebastian Bach at Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Berenice in L'occasione fa il ladro by Gioacchino Rossini at the Teatro Chiabrera in Savona and Teatro Sao Carlos in Lisbon. The future engagements are Frasquita in Carmen by G.Bizet in Japan( Tour with Teatro Comunale di Bologna) and Elena with Lombardia Circuit(As.Li.Co) in Il Cappello di Paglia di Firenza by Nina Rota.
