From fragments to opera

On Saturday, it was heard for the very first time: parts of 'Il pomo d'oro' sounded out live before an audience, in full orchestral scoring. At the workshop concert, Ottavio Dantone, the Accademia Bizantina and a number of soloists offered a glimpse into selected passages of the opera. Even here, it was clear what extraordinary music Pietro Antonio Cesti had created: richly varied, powerful in sound, and full of emotion.

The audience was able to witness first-hand how the work takes shape through joint rehearsal, how voices and orchestra find their way to one another, and to share in that musical moment together.

And this was only the beginning: what thrilled audiences on Saturday without set, costumes or staging will be experienced in its full splendour at the premiere. The myth of the 'unperformable' opera is beginning to crumble – next week, 'Il pomo d'oro' celebrates its premiere. There's still a chance to be there! Tickets are available here.
