The collection “A Musicall Banquet” was a complete novelty when it was offered to a London buyer interested in music in the year 1610. The publisher was Robert Dowland, who was only 19 years old at the time. What the imposing print has to offer is a kind of cross-section of European solo singing prominent around 1600 – from Giulio Caccini to a series of contributions from Robert's famous father, John Dowland. A multi-lingual feast for the ears offered by the celebrated Romanian/German countertenor Valer Sabadus and Johannes Ötzbrugger on the Renaissance lute, who will switch to its lower-sounding descendant, the theorbo, in order to provide instrumental interludes.
