Sonatas and concertos with four violins always hold a special position in string music of the 17th and 18th centuries – regardless of whether they were written in double-choir form, in five parts with continuo or purely as “a quattro violini”. The Ensemble Diderot from Paris has compiled an entire programme of works for this challenging and inspiring instrumentation. It begins in Italy and ends in France, heralded by a chime by Jacques Aubert and cast in concerto form.
