Bach never travelled to Italy. But he often transported himself to the country by studying scores by Vivaldi and Marcello, among others, and adapted their compositions for different instrumentations. The Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin goes on the trail of Bach’s Italian-inspired works, juxtaposing his music with pieces by some of his contemporaries from that country. The historically informed top ensemble from Germany will present some of Bach’s Italian models, performing both a concerto and a cantata each by Vivaldi and Alessandro Scarlatti. The cantatas will be sung by American star soprano Robin Johannsen, who delighted the audience at previous Festivals in concerts as well as on the opera stage.
