Introductory Talk One hour before the concert starts.

One of Claudio Monteverdi's most impressive compositions is “Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda”: a deeply dramatic madrigal that tells the tragic story of the battle between the crusader Tancredi and the Saracen warrior Clorinda, with whom he had fallen madly in love.


The premiere once took place in the Palazzo Mocenigo of the Venetian patrician Girolamo Mocenigo. In the heart of the commercial metropolis of Venice, a crossroads between the Christian-Western and Muslim-Eastern worlds, this was a place of early salon culture where an illustrious circle of society met to exchange political and cultural ideas.


The ensemble la fonte musica, led by Michele Pasotti and repeatedly celebrated by Innsbruck audiences in recent years, pays tribute to the master of the madrigal with a reconstruction of the world premiere of this extraordinary work, for which he developed the so-called “stile concitato”. Behind this “agitated style” lies an emotional performance characterized by rapidly repeated notes and extended trills, which Monteverdi accompanied with a five-part instrumental movement and which is used here as a symbol of excitement, anger and warlike actions.
