Christoph Graupner: «Dido, Königin von Carthago» (Opera in 3 acts)
Libretto by Heinrich Hinsch
Premiere: Hamburg, Opernhaus am Gänsemarkt, 1707
Edition: Critical edition by Jörg Jacobi (Edition Baroque, Bremen)
Performance in German and Italian with German and English subtitles

«The city of Carthage (...) was, like Babylon, 360 stadiums in circumference, which is why it is referred to by Suidas as the greatest and most powerful city in the world, and by Solinus, after Rome, as the second ornament of the earth,» states the preface to the opera «Dido, Königin von Carthago,» which premiered in 1707 at the Hamburg Opera House am Gänsemarkt. The story of Aeneas, fleeing from the destroyed Troy to Carthage, has been a prominent narrative in our cultural history since ancient times – including the tragic love death of Dido.

Christoph Graupner, composer of the «singspiel in three acts,» presents a surprisingly cheerful version of the tragedy. This rarity in German Baroque opera is now receiving its first staged production in more than 200 years. For a distinguished interpretation, the La Cetra Baroque Orchestra under the direction of Andrea Marcon, along with an exquisite ensemble of soloists including Robin Johannsen, Andreas Wolf, José Antonio López, Jorge Franco, and Jacob Lawrence, ensure a fitting presentation.
