What connects Georg Friedrich Händel with Innsbruck? A letter of recommendation.

In the spirit of the historical and geographical significance of Innsbruck as a hub for trade and culture, around the turn of the years 1709 - 1710, the paths of two masters of Baroque vocal music crossed in almost diametrical ways.

The older, now nearly unknown, was Jacob Greber. He arrived from London and entered the service of Duke Charles Philip of the Palatinate, becoming the court chapel master in Innsbruck in 1707, and later followed him to Heidelberg and Mannheim a decade later.

The younger was Georg Friedrich Händel, who, during that period, arrived in Innsbruck with a letter of recommendation for the Innsbruck court chapel from Florence. He might have stayed at the Tyrolean seat of the Habsburg governor if he hadn’t felt drawn elsewhere, to where the other composer had previously come from.

The chamber music-playing Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, together with Silvia Frigato and Mathilde Ortscheidt, the celebrated winner of the 2023 Cesti Competition, presents a program featuring colorful and virtuosic solo and duo cantatas by these two composers, whose paths intersected in Innsbruck.
