Introductory Talk One hour before the concert

“The Art of Fugue” was one of the last works in Johann Sebastian Bach's compositional output between 1742 and his death in 1750. By basing 14 fugues and four canons on the same main theme and the same key (D minor), Bach not only created a practical treatise on everything that counterpoint is and can be and how melodic elements of a simple theme can be extracted, manipulated and contrasted in many voices according to all forms of art. He also created a wide range of moods and - especially in the final minutes of the work - a very mysterious atmosphere.

The Ensemble Explorations under the direction of Roel Dieltiens traces this very atmosphere, with each member of the ensemble playing two instruments - Dieltiens himself, for example, plays the organ as well as the cello. In this way, a wide range of possibilities and timbres can be produced. When the musicians switch instruments, the work becomes both a spectacle and a radio play, with Bach's ingenious thematic inspiration running through it like a common thread.
