Further information

Don Giovanni was a seducer of women and an erotic libertine on European theatres and opera stages for more than a century before Mozart made him the title hero of his eponymous dramma giocoso which was to become one of the most famous operas in musical history. As early as 1669, Alessandro Melani composed the music based on the libretto "L'empio punito" by the Roman poet Filippo Acciaiuoli, who transformed the Spanish theatre material of "El burlador de Sevilla" by Tirso de Molina that was already famous at that time into a passionate dramma per musica. Acciauoli and Melani moved the events of Seville to a mythological fantasy landscape and called Don Giovanni Acrimante and his servant Leporello quite simply Bibi. But they didn't change the plot. Don Giovanni seduces and rages non-stop, mocks the statue at the tomb of a nobleman and women's protector whom he murdered, and at the end is dragged by this statue into the realm of the dead.
