Further information

When the Florentine ruling family of the Medici celebrated one of its festivals which were famous throughout Europe, then every artistic performance had to surpass the previous one in terms of pomp and effort. In May 1589, on the occasion of Ferdinando de' Medici's marriage to Christina of Lorraine, the largest theatre spectacle to date in Florence and the whole of Italy took place. Girolamo Bargagli's play "La pellegrina" ("The Pilgrim") was only a marginal aspect and the six musical intermedii before, between and after the acts were the main event. There is probably no better or more beautiful testament to secular Renaissance music than these interludes, in which harmonies of the spheres sound, the muses have singing competitions, the singer Arion sings one of his legendary lamentations, the God of Muses, Apollo, defeats a dragon and comes down from heaven with his fellow gods from the areas of music and dance to give the earth harmony and rhythm.
