Introductory Talk One hour before the concert starts.

Music - like literature, the visual arts and often political and philosophical discourse - was an important part of the semi-public salons of high society from the 17th century onwards. This was despite the fact that the cultivation of music was largely a matter for the church or spiritual and secular rulers and took place in sacred or public spaces, on the theater or concert stage.

It was not uncommon for the salons to be run by the ladies of the house, who had an extensive education. One of the most famous of these salonnières of her time was the harpsichordist, patron and music collector Sara Levy (1761-1854), daughter of the Berlin banker Daniel Itzig and his wife Miriam, and great-aunt of Fanny Hensel and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy.

The Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin takes us to this very salon of Sara Levy - which was named precisely because of the “musical salons” in 18th century Berlin that were initially known as “academies”. The vocal solo parts of the program will be performed by Jiayu Jin, winner of the 15th Cesti Competition 2024.
