Carl Heinrich Graun: «Silla» (Opera in three acts)
Libretto by Friedrich II. (iItalian verses by Giovanni Pietro Tagliazucchi)
First performance: Berlin, Hofoper unter den Linden, 27. März 1753
Performance in italian with German surtitles based on the practical original-text edition by Roland Steinfeld

A Co-Production with Osterfestspiele Schloss Rheinsberg

Once again, the Festival sees a major opera reexploration: Silla by Carl Heinrich Graun. The libretto is based on a «piece dramatique» written by none other than Frederick II, King of Prussia. It centres on the Roman dictator Lucius Cornelius Sulla, who establishes a bloody regime of terror and finally, to everyone’s surprise, announces his abdication. Of course, Silla – as the laws of opera demand – also seeks his conquests in matters of love. Two of the world’s best and most sought-after counter-tenors of our time – Bejun Mehta and Valer Sabadus – are taking stage. They are joined by Hagen Matzeit, Eleonora Bellocci, Roberta Invernizzi, Samuel Mariño and Mert Süngü. Under the musical direction of festival director Alessandro De Marchi, the sounds of the Innsbruck Festival Orchestra will emanate from the pit.
