Further information

No one else has composed the medieval sequence about the pain of the Mother of Jesus regarding her crucified son as Giovanni Battista Pergolesi in such a sad and at the same time comforting way. The 26-year-old composer, himself already terminally ill, created a "Dolce stile nuovo" for church music a few weeks before his death in the seclusion of a Franciscan monastery near Naples. The Norwegian mezzo-soprano Marianne Beate Kielland and the French countertenor Christophe Dumaux will alternately sing the moving and bittersweet arias and together the spherical duets. The orchestral part, set by Pergolesi in a simple way for strings and basso continuo, will be performed by the Consort of the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra.
