welcome - Innsbrucker Festwochen der Alten Musik
Welcome to the Innsbrucker Festwochen

Melodic moments in Innsbruck

The Innsbrucker Festwochen der Alten Musik are an event you shouldn't miss.

They are an internationally renowned festival dedicated to authentic period performance and a meeting place for masters of their craft as well as up-and-coming young talents on the scene. Since its foundation in 1976, the Festwochen have served as a starting point and springboard for the careers of many artists and are regarded worldwide as one of the most important platforms in the field of early music.

Since 2023, Eva-Maria Sens and Ottavio Dantone have been responsible for the artistic direction as a joint artistic leadership team. The Accademia Bizantina, one of the world’s most renowned orchestras specialising in historical performance practice, serves as the festival’s resident orchestra.

This year, one of the oldest festivals for early music celebrates its 50th anniversary.

Join us in Innsbruck from 24 July to 30 August 2026.

Variety

From the magnificent Riesensaal of the Innsbruck Hofburg to the famous Spanish Hall at Ambras Castle, and on to the Golden Roof and St. Jakob’s Cathedral: during the Festwochen, churches and historic buildings become stages themselves. Enjoy music in Innsbruck’s most beautiful venues, which are works of art in their own right.

With our concerts in the alpine pastures around Innsbruck, in the Hofgarten and right in the heart of the city, even the mountains become the perfect backdrop for the music, allowing you to discover the Festwochen for free in a relaxed atmosphere.

Experience the Cesti Singing Competition, where the opera stars of tomorrow are discovered, or our workshops for children, where the careers beyond tomorrow are inspired.

Historically informed performance practice

What did music sound like centuries ago?
What instruments and materials were used?
What emotions did the composers aim to evoke in their audience?

The Festwochen have always been dedicated to answering these questions and aim to create an authentic musical experience – just as it was back then and as it remains relevant today. That is why every year brings new rediscoveries: compositions, operas and instruments that have not been heard for centuries.
