Introduction 19.00

Johann Georg Benda came from a long line of musicians in Bohemia. When he was engaged as Hofkapellmeister at the court of the Duke of Saxe-Gotha, he became acquainted with a troupe of actors also employed there. It was for them that Benda developed the special theatrical-musical hybrid of the melodrama, which allowed both the musicians and the actors at court to display their talents. The most famous of these, praised even by Mozart, was “Ariadne on Naxos”.

Of this, the Italian keyboard player Andrea Coen discovered an alternative version to the well-known orchestral one for fortepiano. The combination of Benda’s exciting piano composition with the spoken text taken from Johann Christian Brandes’ libretto creates a spine-tingling atmosphere. The Norwegian mezzo-soprano Ann-Beth Solvang will demonstrate just how deeply the fate of Ariadne, abandoned by her beloved Theseus, moved the hearts of musicians, singing passionate cantata scenes by Scheibe and Haydn.
