Your journey

Georg Friedrich Händel: «Arianna in Crete» HWV 32 (Opera in 3 acts)
Libretto: Unknown, based on Pietro Pariati's «Arianna e Teseo» (1721)
Premiere: London, King's Theatre at Haymarket, January 26, 1734

Performance in Italian with German supertitles

Athens was at odds with King Minos of Crete. The Athenians first killed Minos' son, then their ally, Archeus from Thebes, abducted Minos' newborn daughter and raised her under the name Arianna. In the subsequent war, Athens' army was completely decimated. Minos made peace under one condition: Athens had to send seven youths and maidens to Crete every seven years as tribute, to be devoured by the fearsome Minotaur, half man, half bull.

That's the mythological premise of the libretto of Georg Friedrich Händel's «Arianna in Crete.» Hard to imagine at first glance, but true: It's the libretto with the best imaginable outcome for the Innsbruck Festival Weeks 2024. Something to look forward to! Equally exciting is the new generation of Barockoper:Jung, presented to an enthusiastic audience in this production: Neima Fischer, Andrea Gavagnin, Ester Ferraro, Josipa Bilić, Mathilde Ortscheidt, and Giacomo Nanni.

A quilt by English artist Emily Campbell-Pemberton entitled “Meander” will also be on display on stage.
