Introduction 19.00

Johann Sebastian Bach heard the soprano voice of the new Court Orchestra musician Anna Magdalena Wilcke for the first time in 1721 at Köthen court, where he was engaged as Hofkapellmeister. Then a widower, Bach married the singer in the winter of the same year. Anna Magdalena took on the roles of mother, musician and muse in the Bach home. Congratulatory and celebratory cantatas by Bach were performed even while still at Köthen, including a wedding cantata (“Weichet nur, betrübte Schatten” – “Begone, dull shadows”), which presumably was not only played at the marriage ceremony of Prince Leopold of Köthen and Princess Friederike Henriette, but also at Bach and Anna Magdalena’s wedding.

Soprano Nuria Rial goes in search of the musical essence of the singer at the baroque master’s side, performing arias from the “Notebook for Anna Magdalena”, which was Bach’s way of forming a musical attachment to his wife, but also cantatas, which were probably at least in part inspired by Anna Magdalena’s vocal skills.
