A production of Den Norske Opera & Ballett Oslo in cooperation with the Innsbrucker Festwochen der Alten Musik

The groom disappears from the wedding dinner on the day of the wedding. The bride is waiting, together with the assembled wedding party. For days. Years. Penelope is convinced that Ulisse will return. The men among the wedding guests aren’t, and each of them wants to take the missing husband’s place at the bride’s side. After 20 years Ulisse does return, however. This is a modern interpretation of an ancient work of world literature without changing the plot. “ Director Ole Anders Tandberg takes the libretto very seriously, every single word of the text”, conductor Alessandro De Marchi commented, impressed with the production. De Marchi, too, takes every single note of the preserved score seriously, and he also takes the way music was played during Monteverdi’s lifetime into account. “At that time, musicians were still versed in the great art of improvising even the melody in counterpoint”, according to De Marchi. “This art has been lost.” This is why he added the phrases of all the melody parts which used to be improvised to the sheet music for the musicians. The musicians themselves will embellish the notes supplied by De Marchi. This will result in a richly colourful, blooming musical island that will be an expression of the waiting Penelope’s yearnings and the returning Ulisse’s deeds. Since Monteverdi did not set the entire libretto of “Ulisse” to music, other compositions of his will be incorporated in the piece to stage two more scenes that go well with the atmosphere of the other segments: the pulsating madrigal “Zefiro torna” and the lyrical “Lamento della Ninfa”, which bemoans the infidelity of a lover.
