The audience chose her as the winner of the 2016 Cesti competition, the panel of judges awarded her the second place. Now the Austrian mezzo-soprano Sophie Rennert returns to the Festival, taking the role of La Musica from the prologue of Monteverdi’s “L’Orfeo” to introduce songs about stricken lovers. Orpheus isn’t the only one who is yearning to die of love. In laments by Monteverdi and D’India, Ariadne, Olimpia and Octavia bemoan their fate of being spurned and abandoned. Together with Austrian lutenist David Bergmüller, Sophie Rennert will perform some of the moving canzonas and arias from the seicento, the century in which Italy produced the most beautiful musical sighs and tears.
