Every melody is yearning, every rhythm is passion, every chord fulfilment. Austrian lutenist Christina Pluhar and her L’Arpeggiata ensemble present love in the music of Monteverdi and his contemporaries on an imaginary theatre stage, arousing the emotions in the music with sensitivity and a talent for improvisation to provide Monteverdi’s direct melodic speech and the rhythmic pulse of the basso ostinato with the type of freedom required to express boundless love.
