Stéphane Fuget is a harpsichordist, pianist and conductor. He has studied piano with masters such as Catherine Collard and Jean-Claude Pennetier, organ with Nicole Pillet-Wiener, clavichord with Ilton Wjunisky, harpsichord with Christophe Rousset, Pierre Hantaï and Ton Koopman, conducting with Nicolas Brochot … and is a selftaught hurdy-gurdy player!
He has a first prize in harpsichord and basso continuo from the CNSM in Paris. He is also a graduate of the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. He is a laureate of the Bruges International Harpsichord Competition in 2001.
Stéphane Fuget first made his name with a baroque and pre-classical chamber music ensemble: L’Entretien des Muses. His recording of Haydn trios released by Calliope in 2004 was unanimously acclaimed by international critics. The ensemble has performed regularly in concert both in France and abroad, with internationally renowned soloists such as Véronique Gens, Claire Lefilliâtre, Valérie Gabail, Mayuko Karasawa … It also received wide airplay by France Musique, Radio Classique, Deutschland Radio Berlin, etc.
Then, for about ten years, he devoted himself to his international career as a conductor in the greatest opera houses. Alongside conductors such as Christophe Rousset, Jean-Christophe Spinosi and Marc Minkowski, he has worked on the greatest international stages: Staatsoper and Theater an der Wien (Vienna), DNO (Amsterdam), Liceu (Barcelona), La Monnaie (Brussels), Leipzig Opera, Royal Theatre of Drottningholm (Sweden), Lotte Concert Hall (Seoul), Palais Garnier, Opéra Bastille, Châtelet, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées (Paris), Capitole (Toulouse), Opéra de Strasbourg, Bordeaux, Rennes, Lille, Nancy, Montpellier, etc. He has thus been able to forge close links with themost prestigious artists: Anne-Sophie von Otter, Jennifer Larmore, Véronique Gens, Sandrine Piau, Gaële Arquez, Marie-Nicole Lemieux, Kurt Streit, Julian Prégardien, Jeremy Ovenden, Nathan Berg …
At the request of Anne-Sofie von Otter, he was invited by the Frankfurt Opera House because of his expertise in French Baroque music to a production of Charpentier’s ‘Medée’.
At the same time, he has been developing his career as a guest conductor. He conducted Emmanuelle Haïm’s Le Concert d’Astrée at the Lille Opera and in the northern region in a production by Stuart Seide, Ensemble Dix in Carissimi’s ‘Jephté’ in Paris, Ensemble Opalescences in a production of Mozart’s ‘Die Zauberflöte’ at the Fort du Vert-Galant (France), the Joy Ballet Orchestra in Rameau’s ‘Les Paladins’ in Tokyo, and most recently the Orchestre de l’Opéra Royal for a recording of Couperin’s ‘Leçons de Ténèbres’ (Label Château de Versailles Spectacles).
Motivated by the desire to work with young artists, At the CRR of Paris, he developed a singing coach class and a class of baroque opera, that are both unique in France. These led him to experiment his vision of declamation and ornamentation on numerous opera productions in the Baroque repertoire: ‘L’Incoronazione di Poppea’ and ‘Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria’ by Monteverdi, ‘Semele’ and ‘Rodelinda’ by Handel, ‘Calisto’ by Cavalli, ‘Tito’ by Cesti, ‘Psyché’ by Lully, ‘Orfeo’ by Rossi, ‘Le Jugement de Midas’ by Grétry, ‘Euridice’ by Peri …
In order to best express the fruit of this experience and research, he decided to create his own ensemble, Les Épopées, in 2018, with which he proposes a resolutely new vision of interpretation.
