Introduction 19.00

“Bach was an outstanding violinist as well, and knew his way around the instrument”, as German violinist Isabelle Faust called to mind a lesser known aspect of the baroque master. In light of the wealth of sacred music and the works for keyboard instruments by Bach, who was famous as an organist and harpsichordist during his lifetime, his lifelong familiarity with the violin has frequently been forgotten. According to his son Carl Philipp Emanuel, Bach played the violin to an advanced age in a “pure and pervasive” manner.

Most of Johann Sebastian Bach’s violin works were written during his early years, when he was engaged as Hofkapellmeister by the music-loving Prince Leopold of Köthen. In the splendid ambience of the Riesensaal, Isabelle Faust will play the preserved violin concertos by Bach, which bear obvious traces of the then modern concertos from Italy. “They are melodious, full of a delight in playing and bear the mark of a true musician”, concertmaster Bernhard Forck from the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin commented, drawing parallels to Corelli, Vivaldi and Albinoni, “and yet, each bar unmistakeably identifies them as the work of Bach, when the solo part is polyphonically interwoven with the orchestra.”
