Introduction 19.00

Was the celebrated violinist Antonio Vivaldi also a master of the violoncello? A question many musicians have asked themselves, given the substantial collection of solo works for violoncello left by the Venetian composer besides hundreds of concertos and chamber music pieces for “his” instrument, the violin.

Cellists like the Italian Marco Ceccato are amazed by Vivaldi’s ingenious insight into playing the cello and his sensitivity for the character of the lower string instrument. His cello sonatas are truly wonderful pieces of chamber music: bellissimo! Marco Ceccato has created a connection between the sonatas’ significance and Bach’s solo suites. In the process, he has established a close relationship to Vivaldi’s works, which he plays with an elegance and a sensitivity that is second to none, according to the British classical music magazine “Gramophone” with reference to Ceccato’s award-winning CD recording.
