The Argentinian flutist and musicologist Pedro Memelsdorff was captivated by the “Codex Faenza”, a musical manuscript from the Middle Ages. When he found out that the instrumental variations on multi-part French and Italian melodies from the 14th and 15th centuries it contained were really written over the original content of the 98 sheets of parchment, the manuscript was examined using digital technologies. Memelsdorff discovered melodic developments of sacred music, parts of Masses and parts of Marian vespers, which turned out to be the first polyphonic instrumentation of vespers ever. Some of the church music pieces were based on secular dance melodies. Together with his ensemble Mala Punica (English: pomegranate) Memelsdorff makes the medieval fruits of sacred music from the northern Italian city of Faenza (then Faventia) flourish. The hymn-like jubilation rings out again in the reconstructed sound of that period – half a millennium after the music was erased and written over.
