Introduction 19.00

A dialogue between a student and her teacher, between the musician Barbara Strozzi and opera composer Francesco Cavalli: the Argentinian soprano Mariana Florès, who celebrated a great success at the Innsbruck Festival in 2012 in Bontempi’s opera “Il Paride”, juxtaposes the emancipated singer and composer with her teacher. The daughter of the Venetian poet and librettist Giulio Strozzi was highly esteemed in the Republic of Venice, and attended many performances of Cavalli’s operas. Her canzonas and cantatas, which she sang to select groups of artists, echo the dramatic musical portraits of love in Cavalli’s works. Barbara Strozzi expanded her madrigals into opera scenes in an expressive manner that was in no way inferior to her teacher in terms of sensitive compositional skill.
